I Was Wrong About Electrolytes & Hydration For Hiking
In this video podcast, I sit down with Jeff and Jenny, the founders of Tailwind Nutrition. We talk a lot about hydration and the use of electrolytes to provide better hydration in the backcountry. I thought I understood how consuming electrolytes works in the hydration process, but quickly learned how much I didn't understand.

Great tips Devin.
What are the stakes like that come with the tent? Are they good or would they need to be replaced?
👌👌👌 always good points and content brotha!
Have you compared it to the Jetboil Stash pot? That is what I have been using with my alcohol stove. Or I could use it with the included gas stove.
Ah! This was super interesting to watch. I really like the point made that you should really consider your own needs and do what feels good for you. I have IBS so I stay away from artificial sweeteners like Stevia (diarrhea during a long distance run or backpacking trip- no thank you) plus I do endurance activities so I'm always looking for products that have carbs in addition to electrolytes (for energy). But for some people who struggle with serum glucose management (like diabetes), products like LMNT may be the best option for them. I think the market is big enough for all different types of products. From what I learned here, Tailwind's products seem to fit my personal needs exactly! I placed an order to sample all their lines. Always cool to learn about different options out there! Thanks for sharing!
Would be nice to see a short cut of that or just main most important info, cannot be bothered watching long boring video, sorry ;)
Just listen at 1.5x speed. 😁
@@BackcountryExposure or 3x at least haha, oh well...
Definitely the most comprehendable and complete review of this hammock system. Thank you
Looks like a very nice pack especially for the money. REI always runs sales so that’s a plus.
What do you recommend for creating shade in the summer? Thoughts on a pop up canopy versus other options? Thanks!
Great review. I’ve just purchased one. Have you washed the jacket? If so did you use tumble dryer or air dry as recommended? Did the jacket come out ok after washing and drying ?
@0:02 The first essential item is to build a family you can hike with?
The benefits of added glucose for hydration (via sodium/glucose cotransport) have been extensively practised since the 1970ies by UNICEF and WHO to help hydrate when suffering from life threatening diarrhoea (cholera). The WHO-ORS (WHO-Oral Rehydration Solution) recipe has been published and is well known. In case of emergency because of diarrhoea or serious dehydration i'd consider using this type of short-cut hydration, but otherwise i use my own mix similar to WHO-ORS but without sugar but with added magnesium. Not just concerning hydration - I generally try to avoid sugar for hikes or endurance sports, in my experience sugar doesn't prevent me from "bonking" but causes bonking within two hours of reception unless continuing to use even more sugar to compensate for the sugar low that inevitably follows the sugar high. I find it silly to see grown-ups suck on "gel packs" that consist mostly of sugar while running or cycling.
I hadn't been aware of fructose providing benefits to rehydration and was sceptical when i heard about it in the video, so was curious and googled a bit and just saw on PubMed (Fordtran 1975) that unlike glucose it actually helps with magnesium reception.
I bought this pot several weeks ago and have three stoves that fit it. The Windmaster Triflex, the Fire Maple Polaris Regulator and the Fire Maple Greentree which is non-regulated but only costs $20. All of these stoves have minimal burner to pot distance and work well with the Petrel pot. I’ve heard that the Fire Maple Hornet sucks with this pot due to excessive burner to pot distance.
Totally biased and commonsense-less.
I hydrate the same on the trail as in my professional kitchen during a long ,hot day:1 lt water mixed with 1 tea spoon sugar and half a teaspoon salt.simple, cheap and efficient.
Loved the good info.!
Great review! Maybe work on the speech flow a bit.
Your kid is the ultimate professional with the poses and the dancing😂😅😂😅
Interesting subject! tldr anyone?
Devin, thank you for raising this topic. Im not sure about some statements made in this video though. I would listen to GearSkeptic video series on this topic. Its very detailed with references from peer reviewed journals and such. He is not affiliated with anything commercial
THANK YOU. As an older backpacker, I have been looking for this type of info - very helpful. Trying to find the right combinations with all of the different products has been daunting - and confusing. I was just in Durango a few days ago - if I had seen this clip, I would have certainly picked up some of their products to try out.
Keep your tarp ridgeline high enough to lay in your hammock and see around you..
Great to see someone who actually knows what they’re talking about. Every influencer talks about LMNT and it’s not great…maybe I should say…not great for me. All the sugar nazi’s scream about sugar free and how it’s better for you. I have tried multiple electrolytes and I hike year around in Arizona and I can tell you Liquid IV works best for my body. It’s a noticeable difference. You can get them on sale at Costco and Sam’s often. Big bag of 30 for around $20. I know every Tom, Dick and Harry is sponsored by LMNT but it’s expensive and has SO much salt and it leaves the sugar out so it doesn’t end up doing what it’s supposed to do. The sugar is part of the equation. I’ll check out Tailwinds. Great interview!
Glad you enjoyed it. Im not here to throw shade at any other brands or creators through this discussion. I worked with LMNT on a couple videos myself. That said, this conversation with Jeff and Jenny was genuinely very educational and I think shares a lot of important and helpful information. The goal being that it helps others make more informed decisions on what's best for them. Thanks for watching and sharing!
@@BackcountryExposure I know you have worked with LMNT. Everyone does! Even influencers I follow outside of backpacking. Which basically waters down the legitimacy of the brand. When every channel out there has the same sales pitch on repeat for one company you know they are paying well. I totally get you all need sponsors but my goodness! One day it was radio silence about electrolytes and the next everyone is claiming LMNT. No other brands…just LMNT. Not even talking about electrolytes like you just did in the interview which was great. Love your videos. I’ve got 3 boys and we backpack a lot and I enjoyed your last video about camping/ backpacking with kids. I wish it was talked about more.
So much information to digest. Love these longform interviews, great job Devin.
Really glad you enjoy them! A lot of work to make happen, but the conversations are awesome.
As a Type 1 diabetic, I have to be very careful with carbs. I had been using LMNT specifically because it doesn't have sugar that converts to glucose. I will have to reconsider my strategies, which is wicked difficult once you add in carbs into a regimen that includes significant caloric expenditures..
Absolutely! Consult with your doctor and do what's best for your specific needs.
Check out Hamner Nutrition Fizz tabs. As someone on a low carb diet these are one of the best electrolyte profiles with only a small amount of carbs. I use these the majority of the time. Also used heavily by athletes.
I went through a bit of a rabbit hole a while back looking into electrolytes. I wanted to find cheaper or diy solutions and scoured ultrarunning forums. Found Boulder Salt which is $16 for 113 servings. No flavoring. I'll try to take some in the morning when I wake up. Been feeling better with the routine. When on trips I try to keep my pee lemonade color. Looked into the Tailwind products. The recovery mix looks convenient.
I've not heard of Boulder Salt. I'll look that up.
@@BackcountryExposure It kind of reminds me of drinking pool water and there's one ingredient that doesn't dissolve that ends up on the bottom of your bottle. Otherwise, it's working well. When backpacking I carry some in a small nalgene container with an ice cream sample spoon. Need only 1/4 teaspoon of the mix.
Baja gold salt. Best salt on the planet, has everything.
@@NatureBetsLast I looked it up. It's just sea salt. No magnesium, potassium, and calcium. Boulder Salt uses less sodium. Oh my bad it does have them.
Incredible information. Thank you?!
Glad you enjoyed it. It certainly was educational for me. :)
This was a great interview
Thanks Jarrad!
Great video! Nice to know the science/background behind it! Might have to add it to the rotation 😊
Lots of good info! Thanks for being here!
Lots of good info in this video. What I don't understand is why you'd need some special product when backpacking. I get it for athletes working at high intensity for hours in ultra events, but when hiking it's easy enough to drink plain water and eat enough salty and sugary stuff without getting any stomach problems.
Certainly can do that. The proper ratios of sodium, magnesium, potassium and calcium do help in speeding up replenishing electrolytes. One could make their own mix at home-many good recipes online. But if you are not doing considerable output trips this may not be applicable.
Thanks! Just as Jenny mentioned in the discussion, everyone's nutritional needs and body is different. So do what works best for you. Also, activity levels are going to be different for each person. Thanks for being here!
Interesting. LMNT actually lists a recipe on their website also. Surprised tailwind doesn’t specialize in legumes!
does your computer hit the bottom of the pack or will your laptop be safe from hitting the ground?
Very interesting. I might have to make some adjustments to which electrolytes to use while backpacking.
Yeah totally! Everyone's needs are different, so use what works best for you. I've been really enjoying the Rapid Hydration.
Sounds like you didnt do your research for years
There’s some horrid reviews of this item regarding it ripping easy and also very poor after sales customer services.
The hurdle I’m trying to figure out is toddler girls and cat holes….
Excellent shelter! Can you pack it up with the fly attached?
Yes you can. It can make getting the pole in tricky but it’ll work
@@BackcountryExposure nice! Thanks for the quick reply!
What is the brand and model of the power supply that you used?
That was the bluetti EB55.
@BackcountryExposure perfect thank you!
I have zero clue why anyone that is car camping wouldn't just get a full size Pod Rocker. I mean, he mentions here that it folds up to a "small size" so that it fits in your car well...if you're car camping, ESPECIALLY BY YOURSELF, the amount of space a single chair takes up inside your car is basically a nonissue. Pod Rockers are infinitely more comfortable and only cost $50-70. Don't get this thing, just get a full-size camping chair.
Glad to see they're offering this pot separately now! I bought it quite awhile ago as a kit with that Hornet stove, but knew I wasn't going to care for the stove much. I modified the base just by nicking the inside corners of the slots with a Dremel so that my MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe case slide in better. I've used it on a ton of trips now. This things is an absolute beast! The boil times are absurdly good. I'm not sure there's a better/faster combo out there than this pot with an MSR PRD or the Soto Windmaster. It even beats an MSR Reactor! I went on a backpacking trip with 4 people and would feel comfortable with this being the only stove setup. It boils so dang fast that I can rapid fire prep 1.5-2 cups of water quicker than most larger setups could do a larger batch. It's also not overkill for solo adventures. Love how wind proof it is too, especially with the slots allowing the burner to sit further up in the heat exchanger area. If you're thinking about trying this little pot, you definitely should! Easily worth the slight weight increase over a Toaks 750ml pot.
